Originated in consequence of the tragic events of 11th September. 2001. Matt Lamb painted umbrellas with children who were orphaned as a consequence of those events, the umbrellas being a symbol of protection. The youngsters have shown their umbrellas at the White House, the European Parliament and in the German and British Parliaments. Across the world over 400,000 have now been painted in independent peace events. Every day somewhere in the world this global peace parade continues. Send us your photos and stories of your own “umbrellas for peace”

The Schengen Peace Foundation’s Projects Both have forged peace links with 120 higher education establishments across the world. We ask Colleges and Universities to join us in building local Peace Discussion Groups to join our worldwide World Peace Forum Initiative. see:www.WorldPeaceForum.org

Other peace initiatives are being brought under the umbrella of the Schengen Peace Foundation as a consequence of the previous and ongoing activities of Senate and Forum founder members. For example our Senate’ Vice President, Prof. Dr. Pierre Brunel, Vice-President of the Sorbonne University, Paris, has initiated a programme of lectures and workshops around the theme of culture as an instrument of peacekeeping. Workshops have already been delivered in Schengen, Paris and Cork. see:www.WorldPeaceSenate.org

The Talat Alaiyan Foundation brings together adolescent Israeli and Palestinians in peace workshops. The Schengen Peace Foundation has formed an integral part of this Foundation's work where young people, who have been inclined to regard each other as natural enemies, use art to break down barriers of distrust and make friendships.

Dr. Otto von Habsburg, one of the most eminent European statesmen of the 20th and 21st centuries, is the President of the Pan European Union. He led 'Embracing the World', a two-day peace workshop celebrating the Austrian Presidency of the European Union, attended by diplomats and politicians from across Europe. Dr. von Habsburg offered to lead Umbrellas for Peace into the Balkans. He is also the Honorary President and founding member of the Schengen Peace Senate.
